Minimum Liability Limits Increase
The minimum amount of liability you are required to carry is increasing effective April 1, 2008. The new limits will require a minimum of $25,000/$50,000/$25,000 as opposed to the current minimum limits of $20,000/$40,000/$15,000.
Vehicle and VIN Verification Program
Texas is set to implement a new vehicle and insurance verification program in 2008. Testing is currently underway. This is a result of Senate Bill 1670 created by the 79th Texas Legislature. When this is rolled out statewide, any time a police officer in the state of Texas pulls a car over, they will be able to instantly verify if the car is currently insured.
What does this means to you? You must have current insurance at all times because having an i.d. card, but not really valid since you didn't pay your bill, is no longer going to work. Get legal and stay legal. Call Us Today!!!
Penalties: First conviction may result in a fine between $175 and $350. Some cities may actually have your vehicle towed and impounded. Subsequent violation fines range from $350 to $1,000 and suspension of driver's licenses.
How does it work? Our understanding is police officers throughout Texas will have instant access to verify if insurance is in place and current on every vehicle with a Texas license plate. Furthermore, a device similar to a radar gun is used to scan the license plate which instantly will determine if a vehicle on a Texas roadway has current insurance.
